Fanny Cochrane Smith’s Timeline

1834 – Born at Wybalenna on Flinders Island. Her mother was Tanganutura and her father was Nicermenic.

1842 – Went to Queen’s Orphan School in Hobart.

1844 – Went back to Wybalenna and lived with the Clark family.

1847 – Sent with her family to convict station at Oyster Cove, with remaining Aborigines from Wybalenna.

1849 – Her father died.

1854 – Married William Smith, an Englishman, when she was 20.  Granted land at Nicholls Rivulet.

1855 – Her first child was born. She had 11 children between 1855 and 1880.

1899 – A concert was held in her honour.

1901 – Church at Nicholls Rivulet was built on land that Fanny donated to the Methodist Church.

1902 – Her husband died.

1903 – She recorded a song.

1905 – Became leader of the Nicholls Rivulet community.

1905 – She died at the age of 70 (29 years after Truganinni).

2000/2001 – Work started on restoration of the church at Nicholls Rivulet which will become a living museum.
