How the Yellow Throated Honey Eater got its Name

By Philippa

“Yum, yum,” said Honey as she ate more pollen.  Honey the honeyeater was greedy and didn’t leave any pollen for Bee and his hive.

Together they all lived in a beautiful paddock with lots of flowering trees.

Bee and his hive were happy apart from one thing - Honey the honeyeater ate all the pollen. Bee was mad and so were his friends.  They wanted to send Honey away.

One day Honey was so hungry that she stole some pollen from Bees hive. As soon as she was gone Bee held a meeting. “We must stop that greedy honeyeater or we will starve!” Bee said angrily. Everyone agreed. They made a plan to shoo Honey away from the paddock forever.

The next day Honey was collecting pollen.  Beeand his friends saw her. They threw honey at her. One hit her in the throat and made a big yellow mark there.  Honey was so angry that she flew away so fast the bees could not see her.  Honey never came back to that paddock again.

Bee and his friends lived happily ever after. Honey is now the yellow-throated honeyeater and so are all the relations of her.  In the trees one day you might see one who still has that yellow marking under it’s throat.
